A field trial on the effects of pure sodium propionate and a combination with herbal extracts on short term development of subclinical ketosis Organic Eprints
Dorn, Katharina; Leiber, Florian; Sundrum, Albert; Holinger, Mirjam; Mayer, Philipp; Walkenhorst, Michael.
While glucogenic substances in ketosis prevention are commonly used, there is a lack of clinical studies about the effectiveness of ketosis therapy in particular by means of sodium propionate and herbal extracts. Fresh cows between 5 and 50 days in milk of 25 Swiss and German dairy farms were tested weekly for ketone bodies in blood. From 283 cows, 121 (42.8%) exceeded the threshold of 1.0 mmol/l blood-β-hydroxybutyrate (BBHB). Thereof 84 cows were randomly assigned to three treatments on each farm. Treatment SP-H was composed of sodium propionate (120 g per application) and an aqueous extract of seven herbs (13.5 g drug equivalent per application), treatment SP comprised pure sodium propionate (120 g per application) and treatment PL was a placebo. All...

Continuous development is needed within the farm to reach the goal of good animal health and welfare in organic livestock farming. The very different conditions between countries call for models that are relevant for different farming types and can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. This article reviews frameworks, principles and practices for animal health and welfare planning which are relevant for organic livestock farming. This review is based on preliminary analyses carried out within a European project (acronym ANIPLAN) with participants from seven countries. The process begins with gathering knowledge about the current status within a given herd as background for making decisions and planning future...

ANIPLAN – not just "any plan" Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Leeb, Christine; Nicholas, Pip; Roderick, Stephen; Smolders, Gidi; Walkenhorst, Michael; Brinkman, Jan; March, Solveig; Ströger, Elisabeth; Winkler, Christoph; Gratzer, Elisabeth; Lund, Vonne; Henriksen, Britt I. F.; Hansen, Inger; Neale, Madeleine.
Livestock farming is an important part of organic farming systems, and it is an explicit goal of organic farming to ensure high levels of animal health and welfare (AHW) through proactive and appropriate management of breeding, feeding, housing and species specific husbandry. A goal in organic livestock farming is to minimise the use of veterinary medicines to improve food quality and protect the environment, and to do this by improving livestock living conditions rather than using alternative medical treatments. Key values influencing organic livestock production are naturalness, harmony at all levels of production, use and recirculation of local resources and adoption of the precautionary principle. The concepts of "positive health and welfare" are...

Anleitung zur Körper-Konditions-Beurteilung Organic Eprints
Spengler Neff, Anet; Notz, Christophe; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Walkenhorst, Michael.

Ayrle, Hannah; Walkenhorst, Michael.

Ryhner, Thea; Meier, Beat; Walkenhorst, Michael.

Colostral transmission of BTV-8 antibodies from dairy cows six years after vaccination Organic Eprints
Ayrle, Hannah; Mevissen, Meike; Kaske, Martin; Vögtlin, Andrea; Fricker, Raffael; Hofmann, Bernd; Büttner, Mathias; Marinovic, Zlatko; Walkenhorst, Michael.
Bluetongue virus (BTV) antibodies were analysed in 27 Swiss calves born in 2016 at the age of 16–19 days using competitive enzyme-linked-immunosorbent-assay (cELISA) and virus neutralization test (VNT) (animal trial permission number: 75684). Obligatory documentation proved that 15 of 27 dams were BTV-8 vaccinated once or three times in 2008–2010. The offsprings of the non-vaccinated dams were seronegative. Two of three calves and 11 of 12 calves descending from dams who had been vaccinated one or three times, respectively, had BTV specific serum antibodies. As Switzerland is considered BTV-free from 2010 to 2016, it is likely that BTV-8 antibodies were transferred via colostrum. Furthermore, we confirmed neutralizing cross-reactivity of BTV-8 with BTV-4...

Communication in animal health and welfare planning Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Walkenhorst, Michael; Smolders, Gidi.
The project ‘Minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds through animal health and welfare promotion’ is focused on animal welfare assessment and its role in the active use of animal health plans in order to improve animal health and welfare on organic farms. To be active, a health plan requires dialogue between the farmer and those who are able to view the farm from the outside e.g. vets and advisors. The importance of this communication is the focus of this paper. Across Europe we see highly diverse farming systems and similarly diversity in advisory systems and their approaches to communicating with farmers. One of the objectives of the AniPlan project is to develop approaches to health planning that are robust yet sufficiently adaptable to be...

Dairy farms: constraints and recommendations for enhancing health, welfare and food saftey (Workshop results) Organic Eprints
Smolders, G.; Walkenhorst, Michael; Padel, S..
Results - It is necessary to improve the information to the public (who are the taxpayer and pay the subsidies) about organic farming as a system, that improves animal health and welfare. - Consumers must get accurate information about the organic products they buy. - Producers should be informed about organic farming before they convert (so they know what to expect): they should be told about the regluations and pointed to the available information about organic farming. - Veterinarians should be informed (part of the teaching curriculum in vet schools) about the holistic system, the importance of preventive health management on organic farms and about alternative treatments. - In communication to the policy makers (the government), organic...

Die Rinderherde in ihrer Umwelt - Forschung für eine biologische Landwirtschaft Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael.

F.; Roderick, Stephen; Leeb, Christine; Walkenhorst, Michael; Winckler, Christoph; Gratzer, Elisabeth; Stöger, Elisabeth; Huber, Johann; Brinkmann, Jan; March, Solveig; Ivemeyer, Silvia; Mejdell, Cecilie; Hansen, Berit; Nicholas, Phillipa; Whistance, Lindsay.
This chapter is the report of ANIPLAN’s deliverable 4.1 titled: ‘Evaluation report on the state of the art regarding advisor systems, education of farmers and advisors and farmer groups in the participating countries’. The seven participating countries (UK, Switzerland, Austria, The Netherlands, Norway, Germany and Denmark) had widely different approaches to advisory systems and education. This is important to consider when integrating the outcomes of the ANIPLAN project into the various systems in different countries.
